How do I analyze a Windows crash dump?

Configuring WinDbg Symbols
- To change the symbolic render path, select file icon > file path icon > path.
- Paste this text in all windows:
SRV*c:websymbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
- Click OK.
Crash Dump Analysis In WinDbg
- Start WinDbg.
- In the file list, click Open Crash Dump.
- Select the .dmp file (memory.dmp, user.dmp, etc.) and click Open, or drag and drop the .dmp file into WinDbg. This example uses a full dump file.
- At the bottom of the acquire window, type !ascertain -v and press Enter.
- You can see the progress of the scan in the lower left corner of the screen. This image usually uses the status “BUSY”.
This command does basic work with a fully detailed data filter and is useful for getting more information.
- To type quit, type b in the command window and press Enter.
